“Out with the old, in with the new” seems to be an adage Tyra Banks has subscribed to.
For, the model-turned-media mogul has sensationally fired three staple cast-mates from her hit CW show ‘America’s Next Top Model’.
Indeed, it has today been confirmed that the show – currently in its 18th cycle – will wave goodbye to “noted photographer” Nigel Barker (39), runway coach Miss J (Jay Alexander) (53), and quasi-presenter Jay Manuel (39). All have been been a part of the series since it first started in 2003.
No reason has been given as to why the trio’s contracts were not renewed, neither have replacements been announced. However, Banks took to Twitter to say:
Fierce & love 2 my @NigelBarker, @MrJayManuel & Miss J. #ANTM turned us in2 a family. Excited for what the future holds for us. XOXO TyTy
While Barker wrote on his blog:
“‘I will miss the cast, the crew and ANTM will always have a special place in my heart, having made life-long friendships with countless fond memories.”
Executive producer Ken Mok added that he will continue to work with the departed on future projects.
Alexander and Manuel have yet to comment.
I’d bet good coin on there being more to the story than a simple “change of direction”. Here’s hoping the true Lipton is poured in due course.
Although, surely I’m not alone in wondering why Top Model is even still on? For yours truly, there was always more mileage in Tyra’s talk show – the cancellation of which (along with this) has us giving Ms. Banks serious side-eye at the moment.
In any case, at almost 10 years in, I can’t see how a cast shake-up will do anything to help a show that has produced 2-3 notable names (at best). Still, anything can happen.
