‘I Have Nothing’ hitmaker Whitney Houston had nothing but all eyes on her as she took to stage to perform a medley of her biggest hits at the 2001 BET Awards. While the night had seen then up-and-coming powerhouse vocalist Christina Aguilera take to the daunting task of covering Houston’s own ‘Run To You’, it appeared indeed that the age-old adage reigned true that night…ain’t nothing like the real thing.
Schooling young’ns and lessers alike, Whitney worked ‘I Will Always Love You’ and ‘Nothing’ with the same soaring gospel vocal stylings that took them to the top of charts nearly 10 years prior. And while the performance‘s follow-up commentary from Houston may have garnered more headlines at the time than the actual performance, it still goes to say that talent always trumps controversy in the long run.
In her memory, this year’s BET Awards will see a new school of vocalists try Houston’s impressive catalog of hits again. As ever, here’s hoping that the results of such are not met with as mix review as the year’s earlier tribute attempts.
The 2012 BET Awards air Sunday, July 1st at 8/7 C only on BET!
