TGJ: Hey Tasha! How are you today?
Tasha: I’m great, thanks for asking!
TGJ: No problem. So, let’s get right to it!
Tasha: Let’s do it.
TGJ: We’re loving the second season of ‘For Better Or Worse’, tell us how has it been for you being able to bring Angela back to life on the small screen?
Tasha: It’s awesome because we get a chance to show different dimensions of Angela and Marcus’s marriage and relationship. You get to see Angela ”the mom”, “the woman”, and “the friend”. In the movie, she was always on level 10. Then, the first 10 episodes of the show, she was on level 20. Now, this season, I feel there’s a good balance. She’s funnier, using a lot of humor, and a supportive friend. To me, she’s that chick everyone loves.
I have so much fun playing her. Every week, it feels like a new journey and experience.
TGJ: We know people probably assume that when portraying Angela, you’re really playing yourself. So tell us, do you relate more to the old Angela or the new Angela?
Tasha: I relate to the new Angela more. But, I feel like we all got a little “Angela” in us ok? We all want to say things that may not be the appropriate thing to say at the time and we all need love. That includes you too (laughs)!
TGJ: We’ve heard much about Bobbi Kristina guesting this season, but, tell us who else we should be expecting as guest stars?
Tasha: I’m not telling, you gotta stay tuned in (laughs).
TGJ: Well, can you tell us of any plans for a third season?
Tasha: We are finishing up this season now, so we don’t have our official pickup yet. But, the show and ratings are good. We definitely need people to continue watching and supporting the show. Hopefully, we will be coming back next season.
TGJ: With television on lock, we’ve heard of some new projects coming to the big screen. Tell us about them?
Tasha: I am going to be in ‘Addicted’ (Zane)- which is a tastefully done script that Billie Woodruff is directing and I get to play the role of Marcella Spencer. I’m so excited! She’s the therapist of the Zoe character and helping her through the sex addiction. I’m so excited to start filming in October.
TGJ: How much will the movie be like the Showtime show?
Tasha: Well, it won’t be anything like the Showtime series. I don’t want people to assume that’s what they’re going to get. It’s going to be a powerful story and I think it will be a wonderful thing to talk about within our community.
TGJ: Also, you’ve mentioned wanting to play Donna Summer in a biopic? Why her specifically?
Tasha: I’ve just always been a fan. I just love her story. That’s my dream. Every actor has that icon that they would love to tell the life story of. I think she’s interesting and her legacy is powerful. A lot of people may have not had insight into her journey.
TGJ: Have you ever met her?
Tasha: Nope, never met her.
TGJ: So with that stated, what would you say has been your most challenging role to date?
Tasha: I’m still waiting for it. As an actor, I want to continue to be pushed. I want to be able to do different things I never have before and have opportunities I never have before. People see your work and like to use you for certain things you do well. But, there are so many different dimensions to me that I would love to show my family and fans. I want to tell stories of amazing human beings through filmmaking and television.
I am just prayerful and believing God will send me some wonderful opportunities to show people a side of me that they’ve never seen before.
TGJ: Who was/is your acting inspiration?
As a young girl when I saw Diana Ross in Lady Sings the Blues, it was the most powerful thing I’d ever seen. I would look at that movie over and over and I said “one day I will be able to tell stories like this”. That movie was a huge inspiration. I think that’s why the opportunity to play Ronnie Boice in ‘The Corner’ was such a blessing for me because it just reminded me of those moments with Billie Holiday when Diana portrayed her.
But, also Angela Bassett is an inspiration and a friend. Tisha Campbell Martin is a good friend and inspiration as well. On ‘Martin’ and ‘My Wife And Kids’ – she is so funny and just knows that half-hour comedy world like no one’s business. Of course, I’m naming dear friends. But, they’re all talented, different, and unique in their own way. Viola Davis too! Her performances are seamless!
TGJ: Awesome. Speaking of inspirations, what people don’t know is how much of an inspiration you are for aspiring actors. Aside from rocking television and movies, you also have an actor’s workshop (TSAW – Tasha Smith Actors Workshop). What was the inspiration behind it?
Tasha: Acting class really changed my life. I just wanted to be able to help empower other people to pursue their purpose in the arts. Acting class was almost like church! I got deliverance and tools that helped me change my life and help me to become a better artist. I love sharing the information I’ve gotten over the years and empower people to pursue their inspiration in the arts.
TGJ: What should we be looking forward to with TSAW?
TGJ: Last, but not least, tell us about ‘Us’ – your new fragrance line.
Tasha: I love different opportunities and I was trying to find a fragrance I loved and could wear daily. I have other fragrances I love, but they aren’t necessarily one I could wear daily. My husband said “Why don’t we come up with your own fragrance?” I already knew exactly what kind of smell I was looking for. So, we found a chemist and came up with the smell and I tell you – it inspired me! So many people love it just as much as I do. So, we’re working on new fragrances, body butters, and things like that!
TGJ: Describe the scent for us.
It’s unisex and it smells fresh and sexy! It’s like an aphrodisiac – something about it men and women love it!
Where can we find it?
People can also go to www.justtasha.com and order the fragrance online. They can also see the different stores and boutiques [in their area] that carry the fragrance.
Tasha: Hopefully directing a movie. I’ve been working toward that for a long time! I still have my hands in the fire when it comes to directing, so hopefully that’s next!
